About Rouba

Rouba a.k.a Roobz is a soul singer born in Lebanon and raised in the United Arab Emirates. Rouba’s passion for music began at the age of 7 when she started recording herself singing various classics she had memorized out of her parents’ 70S music collection that included Marvin Gaye, Cat Stevens, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, Georges Benson, Roberta Flack and so many more from that era.

Her natural love for music led her to USEK – a reference in musical education in Lebanon – where she learned music theory and took classical vocal training classes. Her first public performance was at the age of 16 when she joined a band called Shades and soon became the soulful voice of Beirut performing jazz and blues classics at live music pubs around the city. Her musical journey led to renowned Lebanese oriental jazz composer and playwright Ziad Rahbani – son of Fayrouz and Assi Rahbani – with whom she performed for several years and continues to collaborate with regularly.

After abandoning music for more than a decade to pursue a successful career in public relations and marketing, Rouba finally realized that music was her true calling and decided to pursue it do or die. She began performing live again at landmarks such as Music Hall, Jazz Lounge, Blue Note, Bar Louis, SNATCH and Bourbon Street in Amsterdam.

Her first single since returning to the music scene in 2012, has been named a “club-friendly slab of soulful pop” by RollingStone Magazine and though dance-oriented still showcases her deep soulful voice. She then went on to write her debut album entitled ‘Mama’s Back’, a fusion of soul and funk, which she is producing with LA-based music producer Joe Kennedy. The album marks her official comeback to music; Rouba is finally following her childhood dream of being a singer and songwriter.

This is a worldwide project, being prepped for launch with a set list that includes covers by artists like Amy Winehouse, Chakakhan, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder and many others - all performed with her own music flavor with the support of Atlanta-native musical director and drummer Stacy Brown.

Rouba made her debut at Abu Dhabi’s Beats on the Beach as part of the Formula One Yasalam program opening for Missy Elliot and CEE LO GREEN, and an audience of 60,000 people.

Her diverse musical foundation and inspiration from artists like Nina Simone, Mary J. Blidge, India Arie, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu, the Brand New Heavies, Anita Baker, Rachel Ferelle and others are reflected in this album which is set to be released in September 2013.

Rouba performs regularly at Musichall in Dubai
